You must have thought about how great it would be if you could choose who can access your Instagram account. This is something that many social networks offer, and therefore Instagram. When you make your Instagram account, by default it is public, and if you want to change it, you just need to set it up within the settings.
There can be a lot of reasons why you want to set your account to private. For me is that I want to use my Instagram account just to share posts with my friends, and I don’t want to have a bunch of people following me. For you, it can be something different.
Changing your Instagram account to private is simple and will not take you more than a few minutes. In this tutorial, you will find:
Setting your account to private has its benefits, but it is up to you are going to use this option or not. If you are making an Instagram account so you can only share content and chat with people that you know, then changing the privacy settings is a very good decision.
However, if you want to use your Instagram account to share something with a variety of users, then setting your account to the public is not a very good idea since they can’t see that content unless you accept them as your follower.
Before you start make sure to think about how you want to use your account, but also keep in mind that you can change your privacy settings whenever you want.
There are 3 simple steps that you should follow to set your Instagram account to private.
Step 1 – Go to your Profile Screen
Open the Instagram app on your smartphone, and you will see your Home feed. Tap the profile icon in the bottom right corner.
Step 2 – Open Settings
From your profile screen, tap the three lines icon at the top right corner, and then go to Settings (bottom right corner).
Step 3 – Go to Privacy Settings
In the Settings screen tap Privacy, and switch on Private Account by tapping on the circle next to it. One more thing that you should know is that Instagram business accounts are not able to go private, so before you do this, make sure to switch to a personal account.
At the Privacy screen, your can control many things related to it, and if you want to learn more make sure to check our tutorial How to change privacy settings on Instagram with your smartphone.
Instagram will ask you one more time if you want to Switch to Private Account. Tap on the blue button with the text Switch to Private, and that is it. If you did everything correctly, switch next to Private Account will be turned on, and the color will change to blue.
Your Instagram Account is now Private
From now on, other Instagram users that do not follow you can only see the number of your posts, followers, followings, and profile photo. If they want to see content that you share, you need to Confirm their following request.
Social network privacy is something that every user should know about. It is up to you how you are going to use your social media account, who can see your post, and who can follow you. So, if you want to have an Instagram account that is only for you and your friend, and make it private so only them can see it, that is your choice. It is a great thing that Instagram recognized privacy as a very important thing for a lot of its users and made this option available and easy to use.
Of course, if you have a business account, you can’t make it private, so make sure to change your business account to personal if you want to use this option. For me, this is a very useful thing since I want to separate my account, which is private, from the business account.
Today it is normal to have accounts on different platforms, for example, Facebook. Learning more about privacy settings on other platforms can benefit you a lot since you can be in control of who can see your content, or who can follow you on Instagram, and at the same time, be a little safer on social networks.
